Day 7: Lake Hart to Coober Pedy

The majority of the caravans left the camp site before we were even up, so it was a bit quieter in the morning. We were mostly busy packing up, which has had us trying to reschedule any future one night stopovers. The kids had a lovely play though, and we spent a little time at the lake afterwards, heading off about 11.

We had a 3 1/2 hour drive ahead of us, with a lot of roadside stops adding a bit more time as the kids couldn’t co-ordinate their break needs! ๐Ÿ˜– All of our roadside stops have had such interesting and beautiful flowers, I wish I knew what they were, or had room for some flora guides! It’s amazing to see what thrives in a seemingly difficult landscape!

We arrived in Coober Pedy slightly worried about finding a spot to stay, given how many caravans left before us from Lake Hart! Luckily there were still a couple of sites at Old Timers Mine, a free camp in town. After setting up camp we went for a walk through the main street and checked out some galleries and opal places. Bonnie was especially excited to see an artist working on a painting at a gallery! It’s a fascinating place – on one hand an environmental disaster with the open mines littering the landscape across the region, but an interesting lifestyle- underground living, chasing the opal dream….!

We had an easy dinner – cheese and crackers, smocked trout and raw veggies, and the kids crashed straight away, giving some time to plan the next part of our trip! ๐Ÿ˜Š
