We had a bit of a sleep in this morning and woke up at 8! We packed up to leave by 10:45, a particularly late start, but we didn’t have far to go. We stopped off at Tolmer Falls lookout, which is beautiful, though the kids were both completely exhausted from a big day and a late night, so they weren’t feeling particularly keen on walking far. Next stop was the magnetic termite mounds. We felt like we had seen much better displays on the road to Sandy Creek Falls yesterday – particularly Richie when he and Andrew went to Reynolds River to fish, but it was good for the kids to see the interp signs, and we got the usual photos! After reading the signs all Otis wanted to do was try break a termite mound and see the soldier termites in action, though I’m not sure that was the desired effect of the signs!! 😆
We drove in to Bachelor for a quick shop. Prices were pretty steep so we kept it to a bit of fresh fruit and veg, and ice blocks for the kids! Another quick stop at Adelaide River where we managed to buy the last sausage roll for the kids to share!
Since we were back tracking we took the Douglas – Daly scenic route, for a change. We saw a lot of burning land – we are still amazed at the scale of the burning program here. Assuming that’s what it is of course! Also some really beautiful looking creeks, lined with lush vegetation, full of water lilies. We stopped briefly at Robin Falls, which is listed as a free camp, and looks absolutely stunning – all these waterside camp spots along the creek! There was also a walk to the falls which would have been lovely, but given how tired the kids were we decided to give it a miss. Neither of us were willing to carry the kids that far!
We arrived at the Douglas Daly Tourist Park just before 4. Andrew and Tegan had already selected a lovely site near the Douglas River – apparently Rufus saw a crocodile there when they first checked it out! Bonnie and I checked, but instead saw a rainbow bee eater, which was good enough for us!
We set up camp then spent the late afternoon in the swimming pool, burning up some energy after being in a car all day! Àndrew and Tegan had dinner in the on-site restaurant. We opted for a sunset drink at the river, then dinner at camp.
The bathroom came alive with frogs and geckos at night time, which resulted in interesting shenanigans in the boys toilets! 🙄😂 (A story better told 🤣🤣).
