We had a pretty relaxed morning – I made pancakes while the kids played in the tent. We had breakfast by the creek, and did some birdwatching. The rainbow bee eater is still the highlight for me, though there are plenty others around. It’s fun to watch a lazy insect flutter across the creek, then the bee eater shooting down and smashing it out of the sky!
We hung around camp for a while longer, aiming to have a relaxed morning, before heading off late morning to check out the river further along. The campground extends much further along the river, with some really beautiful campsites if you are willing to be away from amenities. We stopped first at ‘rapids and spa’, to try to get the kids fishing (apparently croc risk was deemed low 🤷) and have a picnic lunch. Otis caught his first fish on his new rod almost immediately – a small sooty grunter – very exciting for him! 😃
We explored a bit before moving on to check out ‘the arches’. This is a stunning spot, with a crazy assortment of rocky structures creating caves and arches below, and rocky cliffs above. These same features also made it really stressful having four young kids there, as it seemed there were always two trying to scale slippery rock faces and leaping about in high places, and two exploring holes, tunnels and low dark caves, all while skirting the edge of croc waters. 😱 Tegan and I fled with the kids, in the interest of our own sanity, while Richie and Andrew stayed to try fishing for a few hours while walking back.
Our afternoon was some quiet time at camp, then the pool for a swim. The boys came back empty handed (so Otis had the most success for the day). We had a fish free dinner and marshmallows by the creek, and a little bit of spotlighting and frog hunting before bed.
