Day 44: Cape Keraudren

Wednesday 17th August 2022

Richie orientated the tent towards east, so we woke up with the rising sun shining in, a beautiful start to the day! I also woke in the night to see the rising moon, which was magnificent!

We had one of those busy but fun days at the beach! After breakfast we walked out to the reef, since it was low tide. It was a bit of a way out but totally worth it! We saw an amazing array of sponges and colourful corals, lots of molluscs, being very cautious of cone shells! There were fan worms everywhere, disappearing as soon as we got close! Anenomes, octopus, sluggy things, bright orange shrimp and small blue striped lobster. Also small shark swimming in the shallow water, which inspired Richie to try some fishing! The tide started to come back in – it’s amazing how quickly the water comes up! The kids and I started the long walk back, not really wanting to be caught out there! Richie hooked a threadfin salmon but lost it – he’s very keen to catch one so a pity it got away!

We went back to camp for a coffee and early lunch, then with the creek in front of the campsite rising, Richie set the kids fishing rods up. I went for a swim in the creek while the kids bait fished, unfortunately with no luck. Poor Otis has it hardest – his first and only other fishing experience he caught a fish straight away! Not catching anything was trying at first, but he got into it and he’s starting to get the hang of casting. I took Bonnie away for a swim while the creek was high, then we headed to the beach to play in the waves. Eventually Richie and Otis joined us, and Richie left to try some beach fishing. The kids and I played at the beach for ages – riding the waves in, making sand cars, picking up shells. We made our way back in the late afternoon, popping into the creek again for a rinse.

After a cup of tea and a snack the kids and I headed across the creek – pretty low again by then, to play in the sand dunes until the sun set. Then it was back to camp where Richie was cooking steak and shark on the fire again – it is ridiculous how well we are eating at the moment! Though sadly that is the last of our amazing Kimberleys steak. Almost worth driving back to Willare Roadhouse! 😁

The kids watched crabs for a while – there are quite a few popping up around the fire and near the tent. We also keep finding them in the alcove – perhaps we put our tent up on their foraging grounds! 😂 I can hear them scratching about the tent now! Then an early night for everyone, after a busy day!

Watching the sunrise without getting up – perfect!
A convenient clothesline!
Our campsite looking very lonely by the creek!
The sea eagle across the creek from our camp – every now and then we would see him with a large fish!
Checking out the reef at low tide
Otis and Bonnie fishing in the beautiful blue creek.
Otis working on his cast
Making sand cars
Rinsing off copious amounts of sand!
Climbing the dunes
Sunset over our campsite across the creek

  1. Otis needs to know it’s practice practice and patience something pa Tony doesn’t know 😄 when you it comes to fishing his papa would agree with that. Otis sand cars are great but in the photo it looks like poor Bonnie is under the car 😢Are you guys going to shark bay it surprise to be good fishing there xxxx

    1. Yes, the sand cars involve pretty much burying them in sand, then they get to try jump out 😆We are planning on going to shark bay, hopefully you are right about fishing – we have eaten all our fish now so Richie has to catch another! Hopefully Otis and Bonnie can catch something too ☺️
