Day 73: Melrose to Adelaide

Thursday 15th September 2022

We woke to a beautiful sunny morning in Melrose. Otis and Richie watched the cook and the chef in bed while Bonnie and I tried to sleep in a little longer in the next room. Then breakfast – Otis seems to have recovered from his latest knock on the head – and the kids played computer games then on the pump track while we packed up.

We went for a walk through Melrose, got a coffee and went to the playground. We then went to check out the creek, and the kids wanted to look at our campground from back in July! Otis asked: are Grandpa and Omite still there? 😂 Just where we left them, right?! There’s been quite a bit of rain recently and the creek next to the campground is flowing – it was dry when we were there, but is very pretty with water! We hung around for quite a while and finally left around 11.

We drove through a number of small country towns, including various old haunts from younger years – cross country at Wirrabara, bible study at Laura, netball games and school sportsdays throughout the area! The old houses are so pretty – and so many ruins across the paddocks, it always seems such a shame that these old stone houses have been allowed to fall. I suppose fixing them would also be a big commitment though. We stopped in at Wirrabara to look at the silo art. This is something that has really taken off everywhere it seems! We have driven past a lot but haven’t actually stopped to look at any until now! The scale and detail of the work is mind blowing – I wouldn’t even know where to start! Quite a beautiful addition for the towns though.

We ended up driving straight through to Adelaide after that. I thought stopping in the Clare valley for wine tasting was a good idea, but Richie was feeling too wild to do something that civilised, and Otis was asleep. We pulled into mum and dad’s just after two. The afternoon brought occasional showers, and we spent the rest of the day lazing about, checking out the jungle and eating. The kids mostly played with duplo, and had a very bubbly spa!

The little pump track at under the Mount – just as fun without a bike!
The swing bridge at Melrose – compare this with early July!

Our campsite from July, looking very lush and wet!
I made Bonnie a wreath of sour sobs, capeweed and mallow leaves!

Yay, toys!!
