Day 3: Wentworth to Broken Hill

A rough night’s sleep, after Bonnie insisted she sleep on the top bunk that had no guard rail. Richie and I were both sure she would fall out, and woke at every movement 🥱. She was fine 🙄. We had a look at the junction of the Murray and the Darling, a huge expanse of water that had us wondering if leaving the Hobie behind was a bad idea! We went for a short walk along the river, and saw some huge river red gums that must be hundreds of years old.

We headed north directly to Broken Hill, deciding not to take the longer route via Menindee, to cut down travel time…..another time! The drive was remarkably flat, with long straight stretches of road, and a beautiful mosaic of silver, green and yellow vegetation. Occasional groups of goats were crossing the road – incredibly destructive animals but quite cute to see!

We stopped at Popiltah Lake for lunch, which I’m sure must look amazing with water in it! Otis had great fun running his remote control jeep in the dust!

Broken Hill is a confronting town to arrive in, as mining towns can be! Great big open mines and lots of mining infrastructure. We drove on through to Living Desert State Park, which was absolutely stunning! Such a gorgeous landscape, so much in flower at the moment – Bonnie got to see her favourite flower, the Sturt desert pea! We checked out the sculptures and did a short walking trail. Unfortunately Otis had a massive stack, which he will be feeling for the days to come.

Our last planned night of luxury, which turned out a little more luxurious than planned. Note: book ahead in Broken Hill! 😬 Thankfully the rather pricey cabin was pretty exceptional, and we were spoilt with large rooms and Netflix (and the last 2 episodes of stranger things 😁), before we begin roughing it!

Breakfast and tv in bed…..only in a motel!
