Thursday 14th July
Woke up feeling much better, even more so after a shower. Took advantage of being around facilities and did some washing. Sadly the clothes came out looking exactly the same as when they went in. I will have to adjust to a new standard of “clean”. God knows why I packed Otis so many light coloured clothes!
We drove to Kata Tjuta first, which I was particularly excited about because last time we came here we didn’t get there. We chose a short walk, valley of the winds to Karu lookout. As much as I would have loved to attempt a longer walk, carrying Otis over distances is not particularly easy these days. The short walk was stunning (though windy, as the name might suggest!). Such an amazing landscape!
We then headed to Uluru, which Bonnie has been so excited about! We dropped in at the cultural centre first for a look, then to the rock! Again we chose a short walk, the Mala walk. Last time we did the base walk, which felt incredibly long at the time! Admittedly we had just finished walking the Larapinta, but we definitely weren’t keen to try that this time! We stopped in a beautiful wave formation cave for lunch. The kids loved being able to actually get to the rock and play in a cave! We then went onto Kantju Gorge, which was a lovely oasis of beautiful plants and birds, and massive tadpoles in the waterhole!
We made our way back to the car, then found a spot on the way back to watch the sunset. We had a picnic dinner and the kids happily played in the dirt while the sun set, transforming Uluru with a beautiful orange glow. We would have loved to have stayed for moonrise, being the full moon, but decided to get back to camp before it was completely dark.
Back at camp, the kids went to bed, I did some more washing. Quite a few more campers had set up around us, though I guess it would always be busy for school holidays. Hopefully things quieten down a little in the coming weeks, so it’s easier to get a camp!
